North America's highest city is Leadville, Colorado, elevation 10,430 feet. It is a town steeped in the lore of the Old West that has endured cycles of boom and bust since the 1800s, but recently tourism has become Leadville's new economic anchor. Leadville, at 10,430 feet in elevation, is North America's highest incorporated city. This historic community of a few thousand people is steeped in the history of Colorado mining. The streets are filled with well-maintained buildings from the 1800s, and several mining and pioneer museums offer a look back into the industrious workers and famous names who passed through Leadville.

Nearly a dozen peaks over 14,000 feet high, including Colorado's tallest, Mt. Elbert, are within a few miles of Leadville. Recreation opportunities are plentiful in the crisp mountain surroundings. A wide range of dining and lodging options make Leadville a great location from which to base one's outdoor activity in the area.

Leadville is in western Colorado along US 24 between Vail and Salida, 100 miles from Denver or 175 miles from Grand Junction.
